True Stories of Satellite Technology in Action

We like to talk about how satellite technology can help you in many different fields. Today we’d like to share some actual stories from the field, which we have gathered from Iridium, makers of some of the best satellite technology out there. Check out the practical applications real users are finding for this technology.

Satellite Technology Along for the Ride on World-Record Balloon Journey

On January 25, 2015, Troy Bradley and Leonid Tiukhtyaev journeyed from Japan to the Mexican coast over the span of 6 days, and Iridium satellite technology was along for that record-breaking ride. They broke the records for longest duration of a balloon in the air and longest distance traveled by a balloon. The pair travelled 6,646 miles and were flying for 161 hours and 17 minutes.

Mission control for the flight equipped the pilots with an Iridium Go!, an Iridium Extreme and an Iridium partner tracking device from spidertracks. One of the team’s largest challenges was unpredictable weather. They weren’t sure where the balloon was going to land because of changing meteorological conditions. Bradley said, “It is imperative to have good communications when you are on a mission depending on meteorology.” Iridium provided just that by providing instant communication solutions. Spidertracks allowed mission control to track the team and keep them out of harm’s way.

Satellite Technology Keeps Alpine Climber Connected in Pakistani Mountain Range

Graham Zimmerman is a professional alpine climber who had the goal of climbing the Karakoram mountain range in Pakistan. He is passionate about climbing technical routes on some of the highest mountains in the world. He takes the road less traveled, or sometimes totally uncharted, because he enjoys the challenge. His enthusiasm for mountain climbing takes him to some of the most remote places on Earth. Zimmerman needs reliable connection to the outside world for safety’s sake.

During this trip to Pakistan, Zimmerman and his long-time climbing partner, Scott Bennett, were there to climb the remote 21,000 foot mountain Changi and an unclimbed face of a 23,000 foot mountain, K6. A major part of staying safe during these climbs was keeping track of the weather. The team had to move during windows of clear weather, so having reliable communication through satellite technology kept them safe and helped them make their journey up both mountains. They also needed lightweight communication tools to easily transport them up difficult mountain faces. Their lightweight satellite communication tools enabled them to communicate with their U.S.-based weather forecaster so that they could stay on top of all developing weather fronts.

Zimmerman relies on Iridium satellite equipment to keep him connected to his family back at home, as it’s difficult to be away from your loved ones for months on end. Communicating through satellite technology helped bridge the distance between the climbers and their families. He says, “We believe that they [Iridium] make the best satellite communications equipment, and we are very happy to have it every time. For us, it simply makes the most sense to have the best equipment that will also work anywhere we choose to go in the world.”

Satellite Communications: Keeping Industries Connected

Satellite communications can benefit a wide variety of industries, as it can provide reliable communication capacity across the globe, even in remote locations. We have discussed before a few industries that can benefit from satellite communications, and today we want to discuss a few more. Due to the mobile nature of these businesses and workers being located in very isolated places, satellite communications can be especially helpful for these industries.

Transportation

When you’re in the transportation industry, consistent communications can help you maintain a competitive edge. Make sure your operators are safe and know where your vehicles, vessels and cargo are at all times to streamline operations and keep track of your assets.

Satellite can provide real-time GPS tracking to make ensure you know where your deliveries are and estimate when they will arrive at their destination. You can connect with your people or fleet anywhere on the globe, whether you need voice connectivity or data. Fleet operators have access to messaging, traffic and weather reports and work orders so that business runs smoothly from any location. You can also use push-to-talk options so that workers in the field can stay in touch with dispatchers.

Oil and Gas

In the oil and gas industries, workers are often in very remote locations, doing hazardous work. Satellite can encourage better morale by providing broadband Internet and calling capabilities even for off-shore platforms or distant sites. This keeps employees in touch with their families, as well as their home offices. Geologists and geophysicists often need to work in remote locations to appraise prospects. Satellite can help in this effort by offering portable phone and Internet systems to aid in their work. And of course, worker safety is key, so satellite solutions can provide push-to-talk, GPS tracking and emergency notifications.

Mining

Mining is also another potentially hazardous work environment in which workers are often in remote locations and need to communicate. Satellite helps keep miners at these worksites consistently connected to their home office to improve safety. GPS tracking and panic buttons are available on portable devices so that you can track your people’s location and know if they are in trouble. Exploration professionals can transmit their data to the home office in real time to help ensure smooth operations on the worksite. The mining site and exploration professionals can transmit data through BGAN and VSAT technology, which provide them with broadband Internet connectivity virtually anywhere on the planet. Connectivity also improves morale in this industry, as workers are able to talk to their families through telephone services or through video chat provided by satellite signal.

Virtually any industry in which you need Internet and phone connectivity in remote places, the ability to communicate at the push of a button, GPS location services and the ability to transmit data can benefit from satellite technology. Even businesses that don’t typically send workers far out into the field can still benefit from more reliable coverage. When you compare the safety features, convenience and reliability of satellite communications with traditional cellular service, there really is no comparison. Contact New York Mobile Satellite to help you choose the right products and services for your business.

Three Common Industries that Benefit From Satellite Telecommunications

Virtually all industries can benefit from satellite telecommunications, but there are several industries that have workers who have a consistent need for communications on the go without the threat of interrupted service. For businesses where mobility is their life blood, satellite can be exceptionally helpful and even lifesaving. Here are just a few industries that benefit from satellite each and every day.

Public Safety

First responders and public safety organizations have some challenges that can only be overcome by reliable telecommunication satellite provides. They need to make sure they can communicate between base operations and emergency resources during times of crisis and natural disaster. During emergencies, terrestrial cellular lines are often jammed from greatly increased traffic. Satellite communications don’t become overwhelmed during times of crisis, so first responders and public safety organizations have open lines of communication when they need it the most.

When agencies need to communicate with one another across the continent, or across the globe, satellite communications and New York Mobile Satellite’s technology enable them to do so. Since emergencies can occur anywhere, it’s crucial that even remote locations have communications services in a time of crisis. This is so important because satellite technology allows first responders, public safety agencies, emergency services (including hospitals) to communicate to get people to safety quickly and efficiently during a crisis.

Media

To bring you the most up-to-date news, reporters travel across the globe chasing the stories that matter. Our satellite technology allows them to bring you coverage of what’s happening globally. Media uses BGAN and VSAT technology to deliver live audio and video broadcasts, store and forward video news clips and provide reporters out in the field with access to their office resources.

Media coverage is an important piece of public safety. When there’s impending bad weather, a natural disaster, terrorist attack or other threat to public safety, media coverage helps keep the public in the loop so that they can make it to a safe area and get instructions from public safety organizations.

Utilities

Utility companies use our satellite communications to expedite field operations, ensure the safety of their field staff and keep their infrastructure in working order so that you don’t lose access to the utilities you need every day. There is a massive infrastructure behind every service you get in your home and business: electric, gas, water, etc. This infrastructure is usually widespread, so companies need a technological solution to help them monitor the condition of their equipment. Utilities can use Smart Grid, SCADA, M2M applications to monitor, analyze, report, and control applications, as well as access and process real-time and historical data at an astonishing speed. And because all of this data isn’t passing through potentially congested and limited terrestrial cellular towers, utility companies are able to monitor their infrastructure consistently to ensure you have power, water, electric and any other utilities that you need to live. The men and women behind the scenes at the utility companies can also work more safely when they have to do repairs in remote locations because satellite technology allows them to be in constant communication with their home offices.

These industries and other rely on our satellite telecommunications and the kind of mobile technology that provides reliable communication across the globe for about the same cost as terrestrial cellular services. Our Satellite Technology Means Your Safety

Adventure. Industry. Business. Satellite technology is there to protect by providing consistent access to communication and internet technology, offering the ultimate safety net.

Satellite technology enables people to travel beyond the range of traditional cellular communication and still stay in contact. Whether you’re a solo adventurer hiking in remote mountains or sailing from the Caribbean to Canada, satellite technology can keep you connected with emergency services and home.

On Land

With our GPS and M2M systems, satellite technology is the perfect lifeline for the outdoor adventurer, especially if you like to travel alone. Mountain climbing can be a dangerous hobby, so you want to ensure that you are connected should you need to phone for help. Hikers can also benefit from this technology.

Lone workers in many industries can use satellite technology to ensure their safety. Some positions may require lone workers to travel long distances in remote locations, like when they must service power plants deep in the Australian outback or secure oil pipelines in the Middle East. The technology is ideal for relief workers in remote locations. Not only will these workers be connected with phone service, but there are applications designed to keep them safe by monitoring their location and allowing them to check in as part of safety protocol.

In the Air

Often when you’re flying, you can’t receive cellular reception through traditional means. Satellite technology enables you to stay in contact even while airborne. This technology is ideal for airplane pilots to use as a backup means for communication. While pilots do have communication with air traffic control during flight, should something happen with the communication capability on the plane, they would be able to use satellite communication in the event of an emergency.

Helicopter pilots can also benefit from this technology. Fueling a long helicopter flight can be a challenge, but with the help of satellite technology the members of the Three North Poles expedition were able to set up refueling stations to make it across 715 nautical miles of icy waters and remote, treacherous terrain.

At Sea

Sailors, yachting enthusiasts, sea kayakers, fishermen and others who spend significant amounts of time at sea can all ensure their safety by using satellite communications. Weather can change quickly out on the open ocean, so you want a means to track it in real time. Satellite technology can enable you to know what weather is coming your way so you can prepare for it.

Oceanographers, marine biologists and other scientists collecting data at sea can boost the productivity of their data collection and ensure communication by using satellite technology. E-mail, messaging, web access and file transfer via broadband Internet systems complete the suite of solutions to ensure further safety.

Protecting Animals

This technology isn’t only helping humans travel safely. Satellite technology is helping protect endangered species around the globe. Through a satellite monitoring system, combined with scientists’ manual data collection, scientists are able to monitor rare species and help combat poaching globally. This technology is beneficial to zoologists and conservationists, but can also be a great asset to the scientific community at large. Scientists in many fields have to collect large amounts of data in remote areas. Satellite technology can help aid in their personal safety and enhance their data collection experience.

Depending where you operate on land or at sea, you’ll likely encounter times when your travels take you outside of cellular services or the range of the 2-way radio network. For an additional safety net, New York Mobile Satellite offers satellite telephone systems in multiple formats: portable handhelds, in-vehicle fixed phones or docking kits and maritime phones for life at sea. If it’s push-to-talk radio that you require for dispatch operations, then we can extend the range of your 2-way radio network across your operating region, on a global basis. Our products also provide simple integration of satellite push-to-talk with your existing UHF/VHF radios, repeaters and dispatch console systems.

New York Mobile Satellite is also proud to introduce the first line of rapidly deployable satellite enabled self-contained cameras. Satellite Phones Versus Traditional Cell Phones (and Why Satellite is Better for Your Business)

When you think of satellite phones, you may picture them in the hands of Doctors Without Borders in a steamy jungle or soldiers out in the desert. And while satellite phones are fantastic for people working in remote locations globally, they can also benefit anyone with the need for uninterrupted cellular service. There are many benefits satellite phones have over traditional cell phones, for individuals and businesses.

Reliability and Mobility

Satellite phones can provide greater reliability than traditional cell phones, as they are not as vulnerable as cellular towers to disaster and swings in traffic. This means, if there is a disaster and cellular towers are down or congested from a large number of callers, satellite phones will still be operational and enable you to communicate with your team.

The equipment is easy to set up and handy to carry for workers and operations on the move. You will have a connection even in isolated areas if you have remote offices. This kind of mobility can come in very handy if you are taking a cruise, yachting in international waters or traveling by plane. Outdoor lovers hiking or camping in remote locations will have an additional safety net with satellite phones.

You and your team will have immediate communication service even in remote and rural areas to ensure everyone’s safety and security. You will be able to reach your customers and your vendors. Traditional cell phones rely on terrestrial towers and may not have service in the same remote regions. This is crucial for industries that have workers in typically inaccessible locations. Oil and gas rig crews are able to call their families with satellite where they may not be able to connect through traditional cell phones. Archaeologists are able to call in and even send videos of findings in real-time. The technology is truly amazing.

Cost and Communications Solutions

Some businesses, especially new, emerging or smaller businesses, may shy away from satellite options because they perceive with increased reliability comes increased cost, but satellite cost is actually quite comparable to traditional cellular plans. Additionally, satellite gives you consistent connection, a larger service area and peace of mind that just can’t compare with traditional cellular service.

Your customers and teammates won’t have to wait when you use satellite communication solutions. You will be instantly connected with light, easy-to-use solutions to maintain your business operations, even in places where your traditional cellular phone just doesn’t work.

And satellite solutions aren’t just limited to phone services. With satellite, you can email, page, access the web, text and transfer files with more reliability than traditional cellular networks. You can use satellite to communicate between the office and the field, or even field to field if your business requires it.

Satellite Meets Cellular

If you’re still attached to your traditional cell phone, there’s a way for you to have the best of both worlds. With the Thuraya SatSleeve you can use your regular cell phone in areas where receiving a terrestrial based cellular signal would be impossible. This device pairs with your Samsung Galaxy or iPhone via Bluetooth and allows you tap into a satellite network that spans over 160 countries, so you can talk, text and use all your mobile apps wherever you travel.

While you as an industry professional and experienced cell phone user might not need to be sold on the idea of satellite technology, the newest phones come with options and customizations guaranteed to impress.
